Q&A: Vegan trends and Super Bowl takeout

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Are more chefs trying to incorporate plant-based main meals on their menus? I know they will sometimes make you something off the menu but I feel bad asking them to do that.
Kristen: Yes! That has actually been just about every 2021 trend forecast I’ve seen this year. Aside from vegan diets growing in popularity, the pandemic has also highlighted a serious supply chain issue in the meat industry. Some restaurants, like The Goodyear House with their cashew mac-and-cheese, are going meat- and dairy-free on dishes without really advertising it. Bonterra always has a fantastic plant-based entrée, and I’ve been really impressed with what Alchemy is doing with its plant-focused menu.

Q: Any ideas for easy to serve Super Bowl (takeout or delivery) food for about 6 people?
Kristen: Certainly! I’d check out Sweet Lew’s BBQ for classic Super Bowl fare, like ribs and pulled pork sandwiches. For something that’s more finger-food, you can get a party package from The Porter’s House with shrimp cocktail, charcuterie, a dip trio, and crudités. Earl’s Grocery is also now doing curb-side pickup and delivery for its prepared meals, so you can build your own menu and get it without even leaving your car. Don’t forget to get a Moscow Mule kit to make for easy craft cocktails, too!

Q: I love the copper mug in the Mule Kits for sale. Can I buy 3 more?
Kristen: We do have a handful of extras for $12 each. E-mail me and we’ll chat!

Q: I am sure you get a lot of requests, but if you could do a review of Good Wurst on Central that would be awesome. I have no ties to the restaurant but they have the best Reuben, by far, in CLT.
Kristen: That’s good to know! I haven’t had their Reuben. We’ve for sure got them on the list! Stay tuned. We’ve got a big restaurant finder refresh happening soon.
