Q&A: Kindred’s tomato pie; where to take a vegan

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Can you get the recipe for Kindred’s heirloom tomato white cheddar pie at Meltyfest?
UP: That was delicious! Meltyfest was an event this week held at Hello, Sailor in collaboration with Tillamook cheese. Regional chefs served appetizers and main courses that used the cheese, and chef Joe Kindred’s tomato pie was fantastic — just look at that photo! I asked him for the recipe, and unfortunately, he said it’s promised to some publication you may have heard of called Bon Appetit. It should be appearing online in the next month or two… we’ll share the link when it’s live!

Q: I’m looking for the best places with vegan options, but not strictly vegan!
UP: You’re looking for a crowd-pleaser, eh? We’ve got some! 5Church now offers vegetarian and vegan specials, and new-ish executive Whitney Thomas does a stellar job with them. Futo Buta is often overlooked as a place that is easy for vegans and meat-eaters to enjoy, with vegan small plates, rice bowl, and ramen options. There’s a whole vegan section on the menu at Kid Cashew. Also, there are some great international options out there, such as Copper on East Boulevard (Indian).

Q: I’m going to Sweet Lew’s for the first time… what should I order?
UP: What?! How?! Just kidding, but you’ll be back there soon, I’m sure — Sweet Lew’s is one of our top-rated restaurants. To start, I’d go with a plate of the brisket with mac and cheese and collards. I’m a huge fan of the fried chicken on Sundays, too, but if you haven’t been before, you’ve gotta go with the brisket. The pulled pork sandwich isn’t far behind, though.
