Q&A: Restaurants owned by women, paczkis
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: I’d like to host a dinner and discussion with 8 to 10 women at a woman-owned restaurant. Any suggestions?
Kristen: Yes, I’d suggest The Artisan’s Palate. They’ve got a gallery room that would be perfect for this. Another good option is 300 East’s upstairs dining room.
Q: Best Texas-style BBQ in Charlotte? Brisket/beef ribs etc.
Kristen: If you’re not willing to drive out to Peachland and wait in line for Jon G’s, we’d suggest heading to one of two pop-ups. The first is Jon G’s; the Texas-style barbecue spot pops up around town every few weeks. The other is Smoke Show BBQ, a pandemic newcomer by chef Brandon Befler, a Texas native.
Q: Do you think we’ll win a James Beard Award this year?
Kristen: I’m not sure we’ll win, but I do believe we’ve got a better chance this year. In the past, the voting system was weighed towards cities with more past winners — and we’ve got none. Now, I think we’ve got a good chance of semifinalist Greg Collier moving on thanks to the changes in the voting system this year.
Q: Where can I find paczkis in Charlotte?
Kristen: Not many places! The only ones our team is aware of are Zygma in Pineville and Dough in Concord, the latter only selling them this time of year. However, we’ll keep an eye out next time we’re at some of the European markets around town — there are several that might have them. Readers, chime in if you have any more suggestions!
Q: Where’s the best Chinese in Charlotte?
Kristen: It depends on what you’re looking for! I’d suggest The Dumpling Lady (either at Optimist Hall or Resident Culture Brewing), Sun’s Kitchen, Lam’s Kitchen, or Open Rice if you’re seeking for more traditional experiences.
