Q&A: International restaurants, Halloween events
Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: You recently published an article on Enat, its makeover and its extension opening at Optimist Hall soon. However when I use the “Restaurant Finder” on the Unpretentious site, Enat is not listed. When you select “International” cuisine you still cannot find Enat. Looking further, you cannot select Ethiopian, Moroccan, West African or the general category of “African” as a cuisine in the Restaurant Finder. Will there be an effort to review more of these types of restaurants and/or add them to the international section of your Restaurant Finder resource? Your thoughts?
Kristen: Thanks for pointing that out! Yes, there definitely is and has been an effort. I’ve had Travis focusing on mostly international restaurants to work on ensuring we’ve got a more diverse list of restaurants to share with readers. Part of the issue — why you’re not seeing Enat in the restaurant finder, for example — is that our review process takes a long time. For news stories, we only require a visit to make sure the food is good before we write about a place. For reviews, however, we require three visits to ensure our reviews are accurate. The restaurant finder is built to navigate only our reviews, which is why you won’t see Enat or other places we’ve written about as news pieces there until we’ve done a full review.
We’ve been making a conscious effort to ensure we’re covering restaurants like Enat more often in both our news stories and our reviews. When we started the International Eats, we had them in the story template, not the review template. That’s something we changed more recently, and we’ve been slowly going back to add the first pieces we did to the restaurant finder.
I hope this helps give some insight into our process!
Q: Are there any fun Halloween happenings going on this weekend?
Kristen: Yes! If you’re looking for some spooky cocktails, Cordial has a special Halloween menu with cocktails that have an eerie vibe. Billy Sunday is Alice-in-Wonderland themed in honor of Halloween over at Optimist Hall. Another fun activity is checking out the pumpkins at Old Town Kitchen & Cocktails, where the staff is taking part in a pumpkin carving contest. With their knife skills, chefs are pretty fantastic pumpkin carvers. Check them out and vote on your favorite.
Q: Do you have any recommendations for restaurants doing takeout Thanksgiving?
Kristen: Stay tuned! We’ll have a list for you early next week.
