Q&A: Quail Hollow restaurants, the end of ABC

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q:  My friends are in town for the PGA tournament at Quail Hollow and are asking for any fine dining restaurants nearby. What should I tell them?
Tom:
While there are no real fine dining alternatives in the immediate area surrounding Quail Hollow Country Club, one can find some very nice options by just driving to the SouthPark area, less than ten minutes away by car. I would look at Peppervine, Foxcroft Food & Wine, Café Monte, Bentley’s, and a dark horse favorite, Southern Pecan Gulf Coast Kitchen. All are locally owned with a steady, loyal following. Not local, but very much worth mentioning are Steak 48 and Mizu.

Q:  Do you ever see North Carolina going to private liquor sales?
Tom:
Funny you should ask! On April 29, state senator Jim Burgin (District 12 — portions of Harnett, Lee, and Sampson counties) introduced N.C. Senate Bill 938 which calls for the state to cease state-run liquor sales operations by no later than July 1, 2029. Now before we get all excited, the bill was just introduced and we have no idea how much support it has amongst Sen. Burgin’s peers. This piece of legislation has a very long way to go before it ever, and if it ever, becomes law. Considering the ABC system is one of the few income-producing ventures of the state, I expect there to be a pretty good fight. You can bet I’ll be keeping a very close eye on this and will report should there be any significant movement.
