Q&A: The Goodyear House, new restaurants to try
Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: What are your thoughts on this situation with The Goodyear House?
Kristen: I’ve gotten lots of questions about this, and you can find a lengthy response here from this morning’s newsletter. I view the whole situation as an example of how social media is capable of placing the blame of a much larger issue on one highly visible instance — an issue that is worthy of a larger conversation. I’ve been somewhat frustrated by the response that the restaurant wouldn’t need to pool tips if bartenders and bussers were paid more. Good service isn’t just provided by primary waitstaff, it’s how quickly the bussers clear your plates and refill your water and how well-made your drinks are. Is it fair they aren’t awarded any of the tip given for service? Secondly, where would that money come from? Are those who are commenting folks should make more money willing for that cost to be added to the cost of their meals? I don’t discount the possibility that The Goodyear House made a mistake, and certainly don’t think there is any way to prove it without knowing how much in cash tips servers were making. In any case, the legalities of restaurant pay are much more complex than they need to be.
Q: What are some of your favorite new restaurants (as in opened somewhat before or since the pandemic)?
Kristen: I’d put Leah & Louise and The Artisan’s Palate at the top of my list. The former offers some of the most unique dishes in Charlotte, and the latter is wonderful place to catch up with the friends you’ve missed during the pandemic over a cocktail and some snacks.
Q: Thoughts on Father’s Day gifts for someone who loves to eat and drink?
Kristen: Yes, one of our Old-Fashioned Sampler Kits, of course! Some other fun ideas are Orrman’s Cheese Shop’s grilling kit, which includes a spatula you can melt raclette cheese on, spice blends from Savory Spice Shop, and sauces from Sweet Lew’s. For our anniversary, I bought Jon a membership to The Ice Trade, and it may be the best gift I’ve gotten him. It pairs well with an Old-Fashioned Kit, too!
