    Notable restaurant closings of 2019

Seven months into 2019, nearly 20 well-known restaurants have shut their doors

It’s been a big year for restaurants in Charlotte, both in openings and closings. A slew of restaurants have closed up shop, and we’re hearing rumors that more will follow. Here’s a list of the restaurants we lost so far this year. —Kristen Wile

    Aix en Provence
This one hit us the hardest; Aix en Provence shut its doors this summer after suffering some year-over-year declines.

    City Smoke
A new restaurant is already in the works in this prime Uptown location.

    Cochon D’Or
The sister concept to Aix en Provence in Waxhaw didn’t gain the following of Aix en Provence, and closed at the same time.

    Comida
Despite moving into a shared space with breakfast spot littleSpoon, Comida’s well-sourced Latin cuisine still didn’t work out as a concept.

    Desano Pizza
The Cherry pizza place’s owner told us they closed due to an inability to find and maintain a good staff.

    Duckworth’s Park Road
With a new location on Rea Road, there are still five locations of Duckworth’s, but the Park Road location closed in July.

Hi Tide Poke & Raw Bar
A small poke bowl shop on Morehead Street, Hi Tide closed with no warning with a sign on the door.

    Improper Pig Cotswold
Owner Will Bigham decided to bring his Asian and American barbecue fusion to Fort Mill and south Charlotte and close up shop in Cotswold.

    Loft & Cellar
Things weren’t looking good after the entire kitchen staff left and the menu shifted from James Beard Award-recognized to bar food.

    Owens’ Bagel
When it closed, Owens’ ownership said they hoped to reopen. Their former South Boulevard space will become a Snooze once redevelopment is complete.

    Pike’s Old Fashioned Soda Shop
We’re really going to miss the banana pudding milkshake here.

    Ramen Soul
Owner Tim Groody told us he hopes that Ramen Soul could make a comeback, but in the meantime, you can find some of his Asian dishes as small plates at his other restaurant, Fork! in Cornelius.

    Red House Café
After opening in NoDa to mixed reviews, Red House went up for sale earlier this year.

    Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery
Brewery chain Rock Bottom leaves a big restaurant vacancy to fill in Uptown. This will be an interesting space to follow; very few local restaurateurs can afford the rent.

    Siggy’s Good Food
Siggy’s Good Food closed in the Belmont neighborhood after making menu and staffing changes, opening only for lunch near the end.

    Treehouse Whiskey & Fork
This spot rebranded as Pink Cactus, swapping whiskey for tequila and shifting the menu towards Tex-Mex.

    Va Da Vie Gelato
The small gelato shop in Park Road Shopping Center’s parking lot will become a (no surprise) Jeni’s Spendid Ice Creams.
