Food truck Jimmy Pearls will become a brick-and-mortar stall at The Market at 7th Street next month, taking over The Yolk’s former space. Jimmy Pearls often popped up in the space during the evenings while The Yolk was in operation, as Greg and Subrina Collier’s original concept served breakfast items and closed after the lunch hour. Jimmy Pearls’ opening is currently scheduled for Sept. 13.
Jimmy Pearls — run by chefs Daryl Cooper and Oscar Johnson — has become one of the city’s most well-known food trucks, one we awarded an UPPY Award to because of the unique way the chefs have made enjoying their food feel so personal. The food truck serves cuisine inspired by Cooper and Johnson’s shared home of Hampton Roads, Virginia, and the seafood-heavy fare feels like a welcome to their hometown.
“We’ve got some new items along with our Uncle Gene’s fish sandwich, Bubba Chucks, and a few food truck favorites,” Johnson says. “We’re looking to get a little deeper into our bag with seafood and other stuff, too.”
We first reported Jimmy Pearls’ heading into the market this summer in our announcement of another talented new tenant there: Corey Jones and Mad Dash Kitchen. Since the pandemic, The Market has seen several other new tenants, too, including Mano Bella Artisan Foods and waffle spot Sweet Crunch. Orrman’s has also taken a larger space in the market.
It’s been a big year for Jimmy Pearls; Johnson was also recently named Chef of the Year at the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association’s annual Chef Showdown in Raleigh.
The Market at 7th Street space will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The opening date means we’ll have to postpone our Plated Pop-UP with the chefs; instead, we’ll welcome The Hot Box for our Sept. 20 dinner. Get tickets here.
