Help José Andrés feed our coastal neighbors

Wilmington chef Keith Rhodes joins in the effort

More than 400,000 people are without power in North Carolina following the destruction caused by Hurricane Florence. Most of them are along the coast, where storm surge flooded streets and waterlogged homes. The state announced today that those who use SNAP can use their EBT cards on hot foods, as few have means of cooking at home. Even before that, respected chef José Andrés brought his World Central Kitchen to North Carolina to help feed those in need. The nonprofit was launched in 2010 after earthquakes devastated Haiti, and has served food at the sites of disasters since.

Chef Keith Rhodes, who is familiar in Charlotte through his involvement with the Soul Food Sessions dinner series and as a guest on Order/Fire, is working with Andrés’ nonprofit in its mission. His restaurant, Catch, is in Wilmington. Rhodes is serving food from his Catch food truck. Support him here.

According to a Washington Post video, Andres and his team arrived days before the hurricane landed in order to get to work immediately. They have also set up a kitchen in Raleigh.

In Charlotte, we were lucky to escape without much long-term damage. If you can, please donate to World Central Kitchen to help feed our neighbors along the coast. The Order/Fire crew is also in touch with Rhodes, and is planning to deliver food and supplies later in the week if they are able to. Follow their requests on Facebook.

We’re sending our love to the east.
