Food-based charities to support on Giving Tuesday

Help feed your less fortunate neighbors this holiday season

Thanksgiving has come and gone and the holiday season is upon us. As we scramble to find our loved ones the perfect gift, it can be easy to forget about our less-fortunate neighbors. On this Giving Tuesday, December 3, here are three food-based charities in need of — and deserving — help this holiday season and beyond.

    The Bulb
This local non-profit has a mission to bring fresh produce to lesser-served communities throughout the Charlotte region. Their mobile markets will be operating Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m to 6 p.m. this holiday season at various locations. More information can be found here. Food deserts and food-insecure neighborhoods are a serious problem, but a problem all of us can help solve.

    Friendship Trays
Meals on Wheels have been providing daily meals for those unable to prepare their own food since 1976 and the holiday season is an especially busy time for them. Their website offers many ways to help, from becoming a driver, to helping prepare meals in their kitchens, or simply donating money to help this organization ensure that everybody has healthy and delicious meals over the holidays.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina
Serving 19 counties in our region, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes more than 60 million pounds of food to those in need every year. Their partner agencies include soup kitchens, homeless shelters, veteran services agencies, and animal shelters. Needless to say, as the weather turns colder and the holidays approach, the need is great. Opportunities to volunteer or give money or food can be found here.

Charlotte is a thriving city for some, but it’s important to remember that not all of our neighbors are sharing in the city’s boom. A little bit of time and money can go a long way to helping others have a brighter and better holiday season. —Travis Mullis
