Q&A: Dairy-free dessert, patio entertainment
Each week, we answer your questions about dining and drinking in Charlotte

Q: I recently had to go dairy-free, but I miss dessert. Any recs?
UP: I do! I think Earl’s Grocery does a great job of desserts for special diets. Jeni’s Ice Creams (in South End, coming soon to NoDa and Park Road Shopping Center) does dairy-free scoops, in flavors like Texas sheet cake and roasted peanut butter and strawberry jam. Sunflour is another good bet for baked goods. Swirl recently opened in Cotswold, and the bakery serves a daily vegan option.
Q: Where can you find the best Thai food in town?
UP: My favorite is Thai Thai, on East Boulevard — at least for takeout, since they don’t have a dining room. You’ll usually have to wait beyond the time they tell you, but it’s worth it. My top spot used to be Monsoon Thai on South Boulevard before it closed due to development. Another great option is Rai Lay, a higher-end spot from the owners of Deejai Thai with some delicious dishes. Try the kao soy.
Q: Is Paul Verica opening a spot at Transfer Co. Food Hall in Raleigh? Freelance writer Jenn Rice tagged The Stanley in a pic recently.
UP: According to Verica, nope! He’s looking to expand, but only here in Charlotte (at least for now). More on that later!
Q: Looking for a great patio with entertainment before it gets too hot. Where should I go tonight?
UP: You’re in luck, Thursday night is a big night for live music at restaurants! We put together a list recently. Here’s who has live music outside and when.
