20-Buck Bottle: A wine with a cause
Winemaker gives back to help stop poaching in South Africa
by Anita Skogland
2023 Rhino Tears Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa,
Available at: Foxcroft Wine Co., SouthPark / Dilworth / Waverly / Birkdale
Price: $17.99
On the Nose: Tropical fruits, grass, gooseberry (white grapes on an acid trip)
On the Palate: Tongue-tingling acidity provides a very refreshing summer white
On the Plate: Goat cheese topped with fig jam; hearty salad with avocado and quinoa; grilled shrimp or salmon; fruit salad with apple, pear, and grapes
Our Take: High on acidity but balanced fruit makes this white wine a summer pleaser
Fun Facts: 12.5% ABV. Debbie Hooper is the winemaker at Gravel Junction Winery, who makes Rhino Tears in the Western Cape region. The winery donates a percentage of the sale of every bottle of wine to the South Africa National Park’s Anti-Poaching division. Rhinos and elephants are especially challenged to survive due to poaching and illegal hunting.
