Where to buy local chocolates
Shop for Valentine’s Day from these Charlotte chocolatiers
by Kristen Wile
While it’s easy to toss a gold box in your cart at the grocery store, there are ways to do Valentine’s Day better. Charlotte is home to a number of excellent chocolatiers who are creating small batch chocolates and caramels. Shop small, support local, and get a taste of what craft chocolates can offer with some of these chocolatiers.
JF Chocolat
This former D.C. pastry chef has created desserts for a long list of the rich and famous. Now in Charlotte, Justin Fry and his JF Chocolat bring classic technique to his offerings. Order a box of bonbons, caramels, or a Fluffernutter heart for delivery or pick up at Savory Spice Shop in South End.
The Underground Truffle
Made using organic cacao, The Underground Truffle’s gift boxes are vegan and gluten-free. You can also shop a wide selection of bars, including a beautiful orange dark cocoa, crunchy dark, and salted dark. Order online or shop by appointment in Plaza Midwood.
Potts Chocolate
An easy destination for anyone working in Uptown, Potts’ location in Brevard Court sells truffles, cookies, and bars. Walk in to shop on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Secret Chocolatier
Charlotte’s longtime Cotswold chocolate shop is already sold out of its popular chocolate roses, but you can still pick up a wide variety of Valentine’s specials, including chocolate-covered cherries, truffles, and gift boxes. Shop in-store or online for pickup and shipping.
Chocolatier Barrucand
Perhaps the most beautiful bonbon to be found is up in Concord, where a husband-and-wife team have a collection of rose-shaped bonbons for sale. You can also find chocolate roses, truffles, cakes, and more. Head to their shop and enjoy some classic French pastries while you’re there.
