Q&A: Tasting menus, gifts for foodies

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Where can you find a tasting menu experience in town? I loved Counter-, is that the only one?
Kristen: It’s not! Bardo is also now a tasting menu-only restaurant, with the exception of the bar. While there aren’t any other restaurants that only serve tasting menu options, there are a few places that have a tasting menu available. Dogwood Southern Table serves a three-course meal at the chef’s counter overlooking the kitchen for $39, with a menu that changes nightly by chef Jonny Cox. Don’t miss sister concept Fin & Fino’s The Treatment, either — the multi-course menu of chef’s selections will leave you satisfied and impressed. I’d also suggest keeping an eye on the events at restaurants like The Fig Tree and Foxcroft Wine Co., as chefs put together some really fun menus for wine dinners.

You can purchase a locally made cutting board and biscotti or pasta from Mano Bella. Kristen Wile/UP

Q: Any suggestions for foodie gifts from local shops?
Kristen: We just heard from Zia Pia’s owner, Victoria Custodi, that the olive oil kits featured by Oprah are back in stock. Staying on the Italian theme, Mano Bella has put together some gift wrapped sets with cutting boards and artisanal pasta that they’re selling during farmers’ markets. I keep hoping someone will gift me a membership to Orrman’s cheese of the month club. If you’re looking for something sweeter, Twenty Degrees Chocolates and JF Chocolat put together some beautiful holiday sweets. Lastly, we hope you’ll consider a gift subscription to Unpretentious Palate or an Old-Fashioned Sampler Kit. We’d appreciate your support this holiday season!

Q: The UPPYs were so much fun. Are you bringing back events?
Kristen: Yes! If all goes well, we anticipate announcing another event in the coming weeks. Stay tuned, and thank you for your patience.
