Q&A: Looking for the best street tacos

Each week, we answer your foodie questions in and around Charlotte

    Taco

Q: Have we discussed street tacos yet? Meaning tacos on corn tortillas?
UP: No, we have not! I have a few favorites. I’m a huge Tacos el Nevado fan, and try to get over to their South Boulevard location whenever possible. It’s got a roomier dining room than the one on Central Avenue. Try Tamaleria Laurita out on Arrowood Road for great tamales and tacos. Anita’s Mexican Grill is in a strip mall off Yorkmont Road and definitely worth checking out, but don’t expect to get in and out quickly; there’s almost always a line. Neither have beautiful interiors, but the food makes up for it. If you want something prettier, try Superica. Readers, any favorites? Leave them in the comments below!

Q: When Taylor Swift plays in CLT in support of her new album, where would you and she dine?
UP: Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one reading all of the theories about TS7! If we were talking Reputation Taylor, I’d probably take her to the Thirsty Beaver or Smokey Joe’s — somewhere gritty. But it looks like the new new Taylor is going to be palm trees and sparkle, so I’d probably bring her to Fin & Fino for a glass of sherry and some oysters.

Q: With spring coming, which restaurants have the best views in Charlotte?
UP: I’m going to assume you want patio views, yes? Hello, Sailor is a big duh. You can’t beat that lake view. I think The Fig Tree‘s patio is lovely, it’s nice and quiet, and they’ve done a good job with the greenery and lights to make it feel tucked away. Also quiet and pristine is the patio at Poplar Street Café. If you want rooftop views, check out The Waterman‘s new upstairs patio or Merchant and Trade. You can also check out our recommendations for the city’s best outdoor dining, which takes the view into consideration.

Q: Which restaurants have the best event space, like for a rehearsal dinner?
UP: I’ll stick near Uptown for this one, since if you’ve got out-of-towners visiting, they’re probably staying in Uptown. Aria has a lot of size options for event spaces. The Asbury has a room above the restaurant that’s more suited for a sit-down dinner than a party. Haymaker’s upstairs is lovely and has a great view of the park. Fin & Fino has a double room that can be split depending on your party size. We’ve also got a handy list of private dining rooms in Charlotte, you can check that out here!
