Q&A: Fried chicken sandwiches and gifts

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

The fried chicken sandwich from Community Matters Café. Kristen Wile/UP

Q: Best chicken sandwich in Charlotte (that’s not a chain)?
UP: My favorite great replacement for chain or fast food chicken is Art’s on Morehead, but sadly, Art’s is closing on Dec. 20. The sandwich at Community Matters Café has a great crunch and is on house-made challah bread. If you’re looking for something a little fancier, try the Chicken Sammy at The Asbury, topped with caramelized onion and thyme aioli, ham, cheddar, and pickles. Another top-notch sandwich comes from Daryl Cooper of The Cookin’ Coop, but you’ll have to chase down his food truck to try it.

UP: Legion SouthPark has a pretty impressive menu at its SouthPark location, as well as a full bar in case you need a break from beer. The Hot Box recently opened up shop in Concord, and we’re dying to get up there to try chef Michael Bowling’s food. Heist remains near the top of our list for brewpubs, too.
