Nova’s Bakery owner on South End closure
We asked about the future of the remaining stores

The South End location of Nova’s Bakery closed in late September, and a Charlotte Business Journal story on the closure set off a firestorm of questions on the bakery’s future. Adding to the confusion, several restaurants were under the impression that the restaurant would no longer provide wholesale products and sought a new provider.
We reached out to co-owner Sladjana Novakovic to learn more about the future of Nova’s Bakery. According to Novakovic, it’s business as usual at the remaining Nova’s locations, including the original Central Avenue location and ones in Rock Hill and Matthews.
The landowner of the South Boulevard location wanted to buy the bakery out of its lease, leading to its closure. Products for all three stores and wholesale are baked at the Central Avenue location and sent out to the other two locations.
Novakovic also says she and her husband, Vlado, are not selling the business.
“We are not planning to retire any time soon,” she says. —Kristen Wile
