La Piccola Gabbia closes in 7th Street Public Market
The food hall is seeking a new concept to replace the bakery

La Piccola Gabbia, a bakery in 7th Street Public Market owned by pastry chef Gabija Vecci, closed at the end of September. The bakery celebrated the anniversary of its first year in business there in early August.
Selling cakes, cookies, and classic pastries, La Piccola Gabbia took over the space after the departure of Gateau Baking Co.
Vecci, who grew up in Lithuania, moved to the United States and was surprised at how sweet — and generously portioned — desserts were here. So she decided to open La Piccola Gabbia, and serve more balanced options. A personal favorite of mine was the canalé — a French custard pastry with a caramelized crust. Vecci says she does not plan to re-open, and will cease doing catering.
Chris Clouden, executive director of the market, says he’s currently looking for a replacement. (Those interested in the space can reach him here). Though there has always been a bakery in the market, Clouden says he is considering other concepts for the space. La Piccola Gabbia was the third bakery to open in the market. —Kristen Wile
