Government shutdown increases food insecurity
Charlotte businesses offer relief to those furloughed
35 days have passed since the partial government shutdown began. The longest in history, the shutdown is creating a surge in demand for food assistance. As Charlotte food banks and pantries manage the increase in demand, businesses are coming alongside them to relieve the pressure. Most businesses are providing food relief for free.
Some offers are one-day specials, while others are ongoing until the shutdown ends. If you are affected by the government shutdown, there are several local businesses looking to help. If you are not affected, think about supporting these businesses as they assist those in need during this time.
Businesses require federal employees to show a work-issued I.D., and some include extended family members of federal employees. Here are a few of the businesses assisting during the government shutdown:
- Sky Asian Bistro – Every Sunday during the shutdown, federal employees and immediate family can dine in for free at the Pineville location. Co-hosted by M&M Hardwood Flooring, care packages will also be given away for government employees
- Queen City Grounds – Free batch-brewed coffee at the Fourth Ward location to federal employees
- Your Mom’s Donuts – Free donuts at all locations everyday until the shutdown ends for federal employees
- Pure Pizza – Free pizza at both locations for federal employees and their family
- Cuzzo’s Cuisine – Free lunch Tuesday through Thursday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. for federal employees
