Each year, the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association hosts a contest among chefs, pastry chefs, and mixologists to name the best in the state. The three-part contest culminates in the NCRLA’s Chef Showdown event, a public event featuring the top chefs in the competition. The chef and pastry chef of the year titles will be decided based on scoring in the regional rounds of the contest, and announced at nonprofit’s fundraising event, which takes place in Raleigh on August 9.
On Monday, July 12, the regional competition will take place at Charlotte Piedmont Community College, with chefs having 30 minutes to cook a dish to present to judges. All of the chefs who advanced to the regional competitions will be present at the Chef Showdown, where they will present a bite to attendees in hopes of securing their vote for fan favorite chef.
Here are the Charlotte chefs who have advanced to the regional round:
Alyssa Marie Barefield, Sweet Spot Studio
Andres Prussing, Stoke
Chayil Johnson, Community Matters Café
Gerald Hawkins, Gaston Country Club
Matthew Martin, Freshlist
Myles Scaglione, Heirloom Restaurant
Philip Platoni, Southminster
Sam Hart, Counter-
Savanna Broder, Angeline’s
Several Charlotte mixologists are also in the running for the state’s best mixologist; the winner will be decided at the NCRLA Chef Showdown event by fan vote. Those mixologists are: Colleen Hughes of Supperland, Larisa Yanicak of BackStage Lounge, and Rhea Buck of Haberdish.
