Q&A: Dirty Martinis and Christmas Chocolates
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Where are your go-places for a good dirty martini?
Tom: For such a technically simple cocktail, the martini evokes a lot of controversy. Gin or vodka, stirred or shaken, lemon twist or olive (pimento, almond, or blue cheese), everyone has an opinion. Nowhere is that truer than when brine enters the conversation. The dirty martini, unapologetically salty and polarizing, separates purists from pleasure-seekers. A number of local spots really shine when it comes to getting the dirty on. I would check out The Cellar at Duckworth’s, The Cotton Room, The Crunkleton, Dot Dot Dot, Fin & Fino, Sneak, Teal Turnip — and if you find yourself in Cornelius, Barrel & Fork. If you want to fully surrender to indulgence, enjoying a fine cigar with your dirty martini at The Vintage Whiskey & Cigar Bar in South End is like a small spa escape as you wrap yourself in earthy smoke and briny sips. In addition, Kristen tells me that 2025 UPPY Mixologist of the Year finalist Tomas Cordoba definitely knows how to throw the dirty at Rada. Finally, while we typically focus on locally owned restautants and bars, to be fair, in the more corporate chain vibe, the DMs at Steak 48 and Eddie V’s are also quite noteworthy.

Q: Where can I pick up some special chocolate treats for stocking stuffers?
Tom: Easy. The Secret Chocolatier in Cotswold offers a lot of holiday themed chocolates and other treats. You should also take a trip to Concord for Chocolatier Barrucand where you can find anything from chocolate Santas to gingerbread houses and a ton more.
