    Q&A: Top Chef events, figs

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: How can we find out about Top Chef events we can participate in?

Tom: At this point, it’s too early to know how or even if the public will be able to participate in Top Chef Season 23 to be filmed this summer in Charlotte and Greenville, SC. Since what goes on in the series relies on people being able to keep secrets for months, expanding the circle might be a bit risky, spoiler-wise. However, should any opportunities arise, we’ll definitely let you know.

Q:  Is it fig season yet? I’ve been looking.

Figs are just now starting appear a local farmers markets. TM Petaccia/UP

Tom: We’re just beginning to see the first harvests of this year’s crop so you may be able to see figs at some area farmers markets this weekend. In the Charlotte area, peak season typically runs from late July to late August, with some varieties peaking as late as September, depending on the weather. The season is relatively short and the ancient fruit is quite delicate. Check out our guide to figs, to learn how best to buy, store, and enjoy them.
