Q&A: Key lime pie, Bardo, a Charlotte must-try

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: I’ve been looking all over for a good key lime pie in Charlotte. Have you found one?
    Tom:
I wish I could say yes, but I feel your pain. While a number of Charlotte’s restaurants and bakeries offer a version of key lime pie, I haven’t really found many that hit the mark of tartness, with a hint of sweet, and good lime flavor — with one exception. Sam Ward at Wentworth & Fenn will roll one out as a special from time-to-time, and as true coincidence has it, you’ll find it at the W&F shop in Camp North End this Saturday. This version will feature a gluten-free pecan crust with sweet ginger cream. Not 100% traditional, but oh so good. Villani’s Bakery (on the Belmont/Plaza Midwood/Commonwealth border) has a very nice key lime pie that’s more of a traditional approach. Up the road, Landmark Diner on Central has a kind of Jekyl & Hide offering. If you can grab a slice not too long after it’s been made, it’s quite good. However, often one gets that been-in-the-case-too-long aftertaste and mouthfeel. Let me know if you find another good one.

Q: Any update on Bardo and chef Mike Noll? I love that restaurant and was so disappointed on its temporary closing, which has now been way too long.
    Kristen:
Bardo won’t be reopening. Chef Mike Noll is still in Charlotte, though, and we wouldn’t rule out him running a restaurant again one day. In fact, we really hope to see that happen!

Q: I love Counter-. Any other suggestions on any must-try places while in town? The Charlotte food scene is crazy!
    Kristen:
Glad you think so! Yes, if you like Counter-, check out the tasting menu at L’Ostrica. You won’t be disappointed!
