Q&A: 60th birthday parties, caviar, fresh fish
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: I’m looking for a place to host a 60th birthday celebration for my mom. We’ll have about 15 people. We’re deciding between a sit down dinner or cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. We’d prefer a private space as much as possible. Any suggestions?
Kristen: I think The Artisan’s Palate would be a great option for you. They have a variety of spaces, great food and drinks, and easy parking. With your party size, you can reserve the patio at Haberdish, another great place for cocktails! Napa On Providence would also fit your party nicely in one of their private rooms. Another idea is Rooster’s in SouthPark. If you wanted to do something more interactive, Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen has a private classroom.

Q: Any place local I can buy some really good caviar to impress my Easter guests? I waited too long to order online.
Tom: You don’t have to order online at all. Prime Fish Cellars, next to Omakase by Prime Fish in Cotswold, sells many fine grades of high-end caviar, along with other “Robb Report” level items, like A5 wagyu beef, whole wasabi roots, whole truffles, rare wines and sakes, and those $250 prized Yubari King musk melons. You might need to take out a second mortgage though. If you do, please save me a seat!
Q: I need to buy fresh fish for Good Friday, so I can’t wait for the Saturday markets. Where should I go?
Tom: If you don’t mind a little drive, Saltwater Markets, with locations in Gastonia, Ft. Mill, and Clover, typically have an impressive range of fresh seafood coming in daily. A little closer to Charlotte, Clean Catch Fish Market on Selwyn always have quality stuff.
