Q&A: Wet February, cheesecakes, and upcoming UP events
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: Now that Dry January is over, are there any cocktail-focused events I should make plans for?
Tom: Your first stop should always be our UP Calendar, which lists a myriad of events, tastings, and other goings-on in and around the Queen City. On the spirit and cocktail side, I would particularly check out the Gin & Din’ night at Leah & Louise on February 7, The Crunkleton’s “Spirited Luncheon” featuring Bruichladdich Scotches on February 9, and the Jack Daniels vs George Dickel Tasting Battle at the Elizabeth Parlour Room at Hooligans on February 21. Also, “A Vulcan & a Jedi Walk into a Bar — Part II” is the current theme at The Speakeasy at Supperland, running through March 16. May the cheers be with you.
Q: Where can I get some excellent cheesecake?
Tom: Can I go with you? Joan’s Bakery & Deli at Midtown has the Charlotte-famous “Mom’s Cheesecake” also available at Dressler’s in the same complex. 300 East has a long history of putting out some excellent cheesecakes, and there’s typically a seasonal one on the menu. The Basque Burnt Cheesecake at Barcelona also has been known to draw a few “Mmmmmmmmmms.” Landmark Diner puts out the quintessential creamy New York cheesecake. Villani’s Bakery makes several tasty cheesecakes daily, but you’ll have to wait a little bit. The bakery is temporarily closed as repairs are done to its front wall (the result of a car slamming into it). They are hoping to reopen next week.
Q: Kaley Laird nailed it at her Meet the Chef dinner this week. I love going to these. When’s the next one?
Tom: She certainly did! (Here’s the recap). We’re taking a short break between dining events, but be assured we have a full calendar of Meet the Chef, restaurant previews, and other dining events set for 2024. Stay tuned!
