Q&A: Hot weather cocktails, Teal Turnip info
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: It’s getting hot again. What are your go-to cocktails to beat the heat?
Tom: Yes, neighborhoods are once again abuzz with the sound of air conditioners. A gin and tonic is always a good hot day sipper, but I recommend staying away from the more traditional (heavy juniper) gins you would use in a martini or vesper. Go with more herbal, citrusy, or floral gins, such as Cardinal (made in Kings Moutain), Conniption American Dry (made in Durham), or Hendrick’s – particularly its current “Flora Adora” limited release now available in Mecklenburg ABC stores.
An Aperol spritz is another great hot weather cocktail. It’s that small touch of bitterness I find especially refreshing. I like ordering this at restaurants I’m not too familiar with because it’s really hard to screw up. If you lean more toward whiskeys, there’s nothing wrong with a classic highball which I’m happy to say is making a comeback. Again, go with a lighter whiskey, like Suntory’s Toki Japanese whiskey. Seltzer or club soda only – none of that lemon-lime stuff. Of course, with the hot weather, be sure you are also downing plenty of water.
Q: What are you hearing about The Teal Turnip that just opened in Oakhurst?
Tom: It’s pretty early to tell, but initial reports are encouraging. I do trust chef Taylor Kastl a lot. I’ve enjoyed her food at special events and popups for years. Look for our official first impressions of The Teal Turnip soon.
