20-Buck Bottle: Travel to South Africa
Discover sauvignon blanc without the super grassy notes
Cederberg 2018 Sauvignon Blanc
Available at: The Culture Shop, Plaza Midwood
Price: $15
On the nose: Lemongrass, fig, mild grass
On the palate: Crisp, dry, fresh, medium body, creamy
On the plate: Pair with shrimp, trout, green salad with apricot, Japanese cuisine
Our take: This style of sauvignon reflects Pouilly-Fumé from France. Years ago, the sauvignon from New Zealand was most often in this Cederberg style. The New Zealand style then shifted to a style that is rather astringent and very green (notes of fresh grass, lemon/lime, asparagus). This affordable sauvignon should please a variety of palates.
Fun fact: The Cederberg farm is located at high elevation in the Cederberg Wilderness Area in the Western Cape area of South Africa. There is a small resort on the property, and walls of ancient aboriginal art.
