20-Buck Bottle: Balanced pinot noir for mild weather
Perfect with lamb, asparagus, hearty green salads
Mud House Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand
Available through: Assorted Table Wine Shoppe at 7th Street Public Market, $19.99
On the nose: Dark cherry, rosemary, warm spice
On the palate: Medium body, lingering finish, ripe, well-balanced, smooth texture, earthy
On the plate: A very flexible food wine – pair with roasted lamb, asparagus, steamed artichokes, complex salads
Our take: Excellent value as many pinot noir wines of this quality are often over $30. This wine will age another 2 or 3 years. A small amount of juice is aged in French oak, the rest in stainless steel tanks, which gives the wine a vibrant fresh palate.
Fun fact: Central Otago is one of the southernmost wine growing regions in the world. It is only 3,100 miles from Antarctica and the temperature swings from -10°F in the winter (very cold for a wine growing region) to 100°F. This is a dry region with really good skiing and fishing, as well as wine.
