20-Buck Bottle: A classic Bordeaux for now and later
A sturdy red that can stand up to big flavors
by Anita Skogland
2018 Le Comte de Malartic Pessac-Leognan Brand Vin de Bordeaux, France
Available at: winestore, SouthPark
Price: $24.99
On the Nose: Blueberry, hint of sweet dark fruit and mocha, balanced acidity
On the Palate: Blackberry, integrated tannins, medium plus body, lingering finish of supple plum
On the Plate: Spareribs, skirt steak, duck breast, lasagna, eggplant parmesan, burgers, grilled summer vegetables
Our Take: Very good value wine that will drink well from now until 2028. 58% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a classic left bank, merlot dominate Bordeaux
Fun Facts: Chateau Malartic-Lagraviere is renowned producer in Graves. This label, Le Comte de Malartic, is a ‘second label’ for the winery – it uses grapes from younger vines, and adds more merlot than cabernet sauvignon. However, the wine making staff is the same as for the flagship wine, which is more than double in price.
