The news of Courtney Ahern shutting down Your Mom’s Donuts on February 5 was met with shock and tears by the shop’s legion of fans. A little over 30 days later, Your Mom’s Donuts has reopened with new owners who plan to revive and expand the popular business.

Dustin and Colleen Wanemacher officially took possession of the shop yesterday, and have already reopened its original Matthews location for takeout only. Plans to reopen the spot’s dine-in area as well as its Park Road kiosk are in the works. A return to Davidson Farmer’s Market is also on the schedule.

“We became familiar with Your Moms Donuts at the Davidson Farmer’s Market,” Dustin Wanemacher says. “Our daughter takes ballet in that area so we would stop by the market. We would go there all the time and the donuts looked amazing.”

“When we saw Courtney’s post that she was planning to close, we immediately thought, ‘We don’t want that, Is there something that we can do?'” Colleen Wanemacher says. “Maybe this is a sign. Maybe this is an opportunity for us to step in and continue the legacy of this great brand.”

The couple began discussions with Ahern about what it would take to assume ownership and eventually settled on a deal.

“We’re certainly excited about taking over,” Dustin says. “We know it’s got a very strong following. We’re excited the torch was passed to us and we want to continue what Courtney started.”

The couple has set out to revive the main aspects of the Your Mom’s Donuts business – including bringing back YMD’s head baker, Pascal Rosseel. 

Current plans are to renovate and reopen the Matthews dining room within a month with expanded coffee and espresso offerings. Lease negotiations are underway to reopen the Your Mom’s Donuts island kiosk at Park Road Shopping Center. “We hope to relaunch that very soon,” Dustin says. 

To go full circle, the Wanemachers say they will bring Your Mom’s Donuts back to Davidson Farmers Market in the next couple of weeks. “We also want to do more with farmers markets in the area,” Colleen says.

“We’re excited anticipating all the great things that we want to do with this business in the future. There’s so much more to come, she says.
