Which bars won this year’s Pappy Van Winkle

Here’s where to find a pour and what it will cost you

Several Charlotte bars won bottles of Van Winkle in this year’s lottery. Kristen Wile/UP

Each year, North Carolina’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission distributes the state’s allocation of Van Winkle bourbon among the counties. Like for individuals, restaurants and bars must also try to win the chance to purchase a bottle via a lottery system. The system ensures that all establishments have a fair shot at getting a bottle, but also prevents any one bar from having a true top-shelf collection. Here are the bars in Charlotte that received bottles, and what they plan to do with them. These are the restaurants you can visit; we left off those you can’t, such as Myers Park Country Club. Major props to Webb Custom Kitchen in Gastonia, which won a bottle of Pappy and served it for just $40 a pour. Needless to say, that one is already empty.

Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23 Year Bourbon: Idlewild
NoDa Cocktail bar Idlewild took home to top bottle in this year’s lottery, the oldest bourbon in the Pappy Van Winkle lineup. Even at the state mandated retail price, the bottle costs $299.95, though on the secondary market, it goes for thousands. Idlewild will be serving a one-ounce pour for $115, or two ounces for $210.

Pappy Van Winkle’s 15 Year Family Reserve Bourbon: The Fig Tree
With its latest addition, the back bar at The Fig Tree is getting closer to the level of its wine list. The 15-year-old Pappy will be poured soon. Owner Greg Zanitsch says the price of the Van Winkle is yet to be determined, but we’ll keep you posted.

Pappy Van Winkle’s 15 Year Family Reserve Bourbon: Burtons Bar & Grill
Though Burtons got the lucky call from the ABC board, the Park Road restaurant is still not sure whether they’ll be putting the bottle on the shelf. It will likely be saved for a special bourbon tasting, so keep on eye on the restaurant’s events if you’re looking to try this Van Winkle expression.

    Buffalo Trace O.F.C. 1994: Fin & Fino
It’s not Van Winkle. but another rare bottle from Buffalo Trace — this one costs $2,500 at the retail price — is on the shelves at Fin & Fino. The bourbon has been aged 25 years, and comes in a crystal decanter bottle with beautiful wooden case. Last year’s release saw less than 1,000 bottles, with several being given to charity as fundraising auction items. Sipping on the unicorn at Fin & Fino will cost you $200 for an ounce or $350 for two ounces. —Kristen Wile
