Where’s Vic the Chili Man?
The popular Uptown hot dog vendor won’t be on the streets for a while

Vic the Chili Man won’t be on the streets for the next couple of weeks. Vic Werany, whose hot dog stand has become a staple in Uptown, will be taking at least two and a half weeks off to stay home with his wife as she recovers from surgery following an episode of diverticulitis.
However, the timing of his return is also dependent on his own health. Werany has been struggling with knee problems, with pain so severe it keeps him up at night. He’s got an MRI scheduled which will help determine what’s next for him. Over the past three weeks, the chili man’s stand on Tryon Street has only been open one day a week.
Vic the Chili Man’s season generally runs through mid-November, and Werany is hoping to get back out on the streets to wrap up his season once he and Tara are both healed. Even then, though, it will likely only be a day or two a week.
In the off-season, Werany runs an annual charity event and skate deck art auction called SHRED, which raises money for children with disabilities and rare medical conditions. During their time at home, the Weranys will be working on next year’s event.
We’re sending our best to the Chili Man and his family. —Kristen Wile
