Where to shop local for food-lovers

Here are the items from local shops and makers on our wish list

There’s an artisan renaissance happening in Charlotte, and as a result, our wish list is growing longer. Instead of clicking around on Amazon this year, pick up some of these locally sold gifts for the culinarians in your life. —Kristen Wile

    Bar roll-up, Colsen Keane
    $45
Any of the hand-made leather goods at Colsen Keane are wonderfully giftable. We’re partial to their waxed-canvas roll-up for bar tools for those who want to be the party’s resident bartender whether they’re hosting or not. The kit comes with all of the essentials.

007 Champagne, Assorted Table Wine Shoppe
    $229
7th Street Public Market’s wine retailer received some of Champagne house Bollinger’s special edition 2011 vintage honoring James Bond. A great buy for Bond-loving Champagne snobs, this 007 special release comes with a wooden box featuring all of the film names on it.

    Cooking classes, Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen
    $65
The knife skills basics class taught at Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen made me a much more efficient (and safe) home cook, while classes focused on specific cuisines have taught me reliable cooking techniques I can apply to home menu planning. Print off a gift card and tie it around a jar of Chef Alyssa’s Champagne-Tomato Jam for extra presentation points.

    Unpretentious Palate subscription
    $59.99
Let your friends and family in on your secret to picking great restaurants and staying in-the-know about what’s happening in the Charlotte food scene by gifting a one-year subscription to Unpretentious Palate. Why not throw in an Unpretentious Eater or Drinker t-shirt, too?

    Barbecue sauce, Sweet Lew’s BBQ
    $10 each
We were bummed to hear that Sweet Lew’s Alabama white sauce wouldn’t be available when the barbecue restaurant first started selling bottled sauces. Now that it’s on the market, the chicken sauce is our top pick to gift to a barbecue lover, but an even more generous gift would be to buy the whole set of four.

Cheese club membership, Orrman’s Cheese Shop
$180 shipped, $135 in-store pick up for three months
Each month, the cheese mongers at Orrman’s will select three cheeses to send to cheese club members. The cheeses come with descriptions and pairing recommendations, making this a great gift for the cheese nerd in your life.

    Cheese straws, Reid’s Fine Foods
    $15.99
Our favorite gift for the folks at doggie daycare and friends in the North, the cheese straws at Reid’s are a delicious treat to gift if you’d rather not make them at home. Keep them on hand for the person who shows up with a gift when you don’t have one in return.

Loose leaf tea, Birch Fine Tea
    $24
The women behind Birch Fine Tea have created some fantastic blends, and their three-pack gift set — available as caffeinated and caffeine-free — provides a sampling of their talents. To taste for yourself, head to their shop in Camp North End for a cup, and leave with a bag full of gifts.
