Where to get your knives sharpened

Three places for when your kitchen gets dull

Jon and I used to always take our knives to Atherton Market on Saturday mornings when they needed a sharpening. We’d drop them off at The Mobile Stone, a truck parked out front, do our shopping, and come back and pick them up, gleaming and efficient. We haven’t seen the truck at Atherton lately, so our knives are in serious need of a sharpening. Here are three places to take your knives if you’re in the same dull position.

    THE MOBILE STONE
Find The Mobile Stone at the Charlotte Regional Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. Owner Thomas Richards will also bring his truck to you (there is a minimum). Straight-edge knives cost $3 to $7, depending on size. Richards also does serrated knives, scissors, and blade repair.

    BLACKHAWK HARDWARE
Park Road Shopping Center’s Blackhawk Hardware is a drop-off point for Troutman’s Sharpening Service. There’s no minimum, and repairs cost $4 per knife. You can also drop off pizza rollers, grill scrapers, hunting knives, and garden tools. Knives are picked up and delivered by Troutman’s on Mondays.

    WILLIAMS-SONOMA
Your first knife is free, and each knife after that is $5 at Williams-Sonoma in SouthPark. The store asks for 24 hours to work on them, but on slower days, they can usually take care of your sharpening while you shop.

You can also take a knife skills class at Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen to learn how to use a steel sharpener and wet stone. Have a favorite place to take your knives that we didn’t mention? Let us know in the comments! —Kristen Wile
