    Where to celebrate Repeal Day

Good deals and classic cocktails to celebrate the day Prohibition ended

It’s Repeal Day, the anniversary of when Prohibition was ended in the United States. Charlotte continued to ban liquor by the drink for years to come, but we can still celebrate the day when Americans outside of dark speakeasies realized the importance a good cocktail. Here are some of the cocktail bars celebrating around town.

    BACKSTAGE LOUNGE
This bar behind SouthBound requires you to go around the back and look for the red light. With stunning woodwork and deep booths, Backstage Lounge takes you back in time. For Repeal Day, you can try three expressions of Old Forester (1870, 1897, and 1920) for $20. There will also be a warm bourbon cider for $9. $20 membership required to enter.

    BARDO
Amanda Britton, the bar wizard at one of the city’s best new restaurants, will serve up a special $13 cocktail menu tonight at Bardo. The menu is all Prohibition cocktails, several of which use North Carolina spirits. You’ll see the Sidecar, Sazerac, and Last Word. Order a classic drink, then one of Britton’s modern creations, and taste the evolution of the cocktail scene. Britton’s significant other and fellow mixologist Larry Suggs will be on hand behind the bar, too.

    THE COTTON ROOM
This Uptown bar is hosting its first annual repeal day party on Saturday, with $9 Jim Beam craft cocktails and giveaways for those dressed in vintage costumes. The bar’s regular menu will be available, too. Entry is free; register here. The event begins at 6 p.m.

    DOT DOT DOT
This dark and sultry cocktail bar underneath Park Road Shopping Center has several single barrel spirits exclusive to the bar, and each one will cost $12 for 1.5-ounce pours tonight. Among the single barrels are two Elijah Craigs, an Old Forester, a Knob Creek, and an El Tesoro reposado. A new cocktail menu will also make its debut this evening, listing several Prohibition-inspired drinks, including a barrel-aged El Presidente and Mexican hot chocolate, made using the bar’s El Tesoro.

    HABERDISH
A playful menu that reads like a newspaper announcement (this plays right to our heart, Haberdish) lists Prohibition-era cocktails as part of the restaurant’s week-long celebration of Repeal Day. They’re having fun with this one, too — “Cup of Coffee,” for example is simply their single barrel Knob Creek “served on the sly” in a coffee cup.
