South End Market is moving outside
The former Atherton Market will set up at Tremont and South
Continuing construction at Atherton Mill means the South End Market will be moving once again. As of this weekend, the market will set up on Saturdays on the corner of Tremont Avenue and South Boulevard.
When it opened in 2010, the market was in the corner of Atherton in the old trolley building. When Edens began development on the property, the market was moved to the interior of the retail side of Atherton, between Living Kitchen and Free People. The market’s future home is a covered, open-air space along the rail trail.
“It’s bittersweet,” South End Market Director Samantha DeRosa said in a press release. “We certainly enjoyed our unique position as an indoor farmers market, but we’re very excited about the additional visibility being outdoors will give our farmers, ranchers, food artisans, and crafters.”
The market’s opening hours will also shift back one hour, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’re regulars at the South End Market, seeking out our kitchen staples like chicken from Windy Hill Farms, produce from Bell’s Best, and mushrooms from Urban Gourmet Farms. As one of the city’s only indoor markets, we’re sad to see Edens isn’t making space for the market inside, but hopeful that the market will see more visitors when it isn’t buried inside of the development. —Kristen Wile
