    Q&A: What’s next for restaurants

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Will restaurants make it through this?
UP: Some will, some will not. The restaurant owners I’ve asked said they can last from, on average, two weeks to a few months. Government assistance will be crucial. Currently, low-interest SBA loan applications are open for businesses in North Carolina, but more than that will be needed, as loans can only be repaid if restaurants will make enough money when they reopen to pay back the loans. Many won’t be able to do that, as margins are already tiny. Keep on supporting restaurants through takeout, if you can, tip well, and purchase gift cards.

Q: Are the farmers markets open this weekend?
UP: Yes, several are! Charlotte Regional Farmers Market, South End Market, and the Matthews market will be open. However, guests are being asked to not touch product, and instead let the vendor handle everything. There will also be no sampling of products.

Q: Is there anywhere we can donate to industry people who have been laid off?
UP: The United States Bartenders’ Guild is doing a lot of fundraising and donating. Locally, there are some things being put together, such as the Plaza Midwood-specific fundraiser Plaza Midwood Cares. We will keep you posted when more comes available!

Q: Will takeout be enough to keep restaurants in business?
UP: I think certain concepts will be able to make takeout work, but fine dining establishments will have a tougher time getting people to think of them as a takeout spot. The more casual places seem to be doing the best; most folks I spoke to said they’re making about 20 percent of their usual revenue by doing takeout. However, to most business owners, making enough to cover expenses is a win right now.

Q: We’d love to take part in your virtual happy hour! How can we get involved?
UP: Awesome! We’re so excited about the event with Brian Lorusso, because we think he makes the best old-fashioned in town. We’re going to make sure this one runs smoothly first technology-wise, then we’ll release upcoming dates next week, and keep releasing them until we’re allowed to leave our houses again Join us for the first one here!
