Q&A: Walking tours, NC gin, and a Bradford watermelon update
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: I used to love the FEAST walking tours of restaurants. Do you know if they ever will return?
Tom: Those were really fun! I miss them too. These days, FEAST Food Tours founder Kristi Martin is focusing on her nonprofit Feast for Good, which works to supply meals to those undergoing cancer treatments. We did reach out to check. Her reply was “No and maybe yes.” The tour business was legally dissolved however, Martin sees the possibility of doing a tour or two as a fundraiser. “Our mission of gathering the community, savoring great food, and connecting with the talents of local culinarians continues through the work of Feast for Good: Nourishment to Brave Cancer. We’re using our donations and buying power to source from and support local businesses to feed patients and hope our food-related fundraising efforts motivate enlightened people to our area’s best,” she says.
Q: I was surprised by the number of gins in the NC section of the ABC store. Are any of them any good? I mean, really?
Tom: The quick answer is “oh, you betcha!” But funny you should ask, we currently working on a roundup of North Carolina craft gins. Look for it soon.
UPDATE: Originally asked May 18
Q: Any word if we’ll see Bradford watermelons this year? I’m still upset they lost their entire crop last year.
Tom: At the time we said Nat Bradford was planning his prized planting at the end of May. We’re happy to report all went smoothly and Nat is now taking orders for the 2023 harvest — expected sometime in mid-August. If you skip the interstate, it’s a beautiful drive. Maybe I’ll see you there. My order is already in!
