Q&A: Vana Lake Norman, beer with local grains, holiday catering
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: What happened to the Vana that was suppose to go up in Cornelius?
Kristen: It’s still in progress! Like most projects these days, it’s been delayed. Construction is underway, and the new opening timeline is looking like another six weeks, according to co-owner Jayson Whiteside.
Q: Are any local breweries using high quality or organic grains in their beers?
Kristen: Several Charlotte breweries use local grains from Cleveland, North Carolina-based Carolina Malt House, including Free Range Brewing, Legion Brewing and Cabarrus Brewing Co. I asked beer writer Brian Beauchemin, who had this to add: “I don’t believe there are any breweries using organic grains on a consistent basis. I would say they’re all using the highest quality grains they can — some malted in N.C., some in other areas of the U.S. and some from Europe (which would mostly be Germany and the U.K.).
Q: I’m striking out with catering for a holiday party. I’ve tried Hot Box, Roots, QC Catering, Your Farms Your Table, Plate Perfect, and L’Ostrica. Any other ideas?
Kristen: Yes, definitely! I’d suggest checking out Copain, Patrick’s Gourmet, or Alternative Chef NC.
