Q&A: That shrimp and grits, three must-visit spots

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Shrimp and grits from The Yolk. Kristen Wile/UP

Q: Where is that photo from?!
UP: This question is in reference to the shrimp and grits we posted on our Instagram story, which you can see to the left. These delicious shrimp and grits are from The Yolk in 7th Street Public Market. Chef/owner Greg Collier serves some of the best grits in town, and here, they’re topped with jerk shrimp and a scallion pesto.

Q: If you could pick three different restaurants to go to for a last meal before baby, no expense spared but doesn’t have to be fancy, where would you pick?
UP: This is a fun one! My first stop would be Stagioni, what chef Eric Ferguson is doing there is really fantastic and while you could probably bring a baby there during an early reservation, the tight quarters would make it difficult. I’d also head up to Kindred, because while they are super family-oriented, the drive adds extra out-of-the-house time. I’d also do a night at The Fig Tree, because there’s something calming about that place, and calm is something you won’t have for a while! And if you’re comfortable drinking a glass of wine, they’ll be sure the one you get is fantastic.

Q: Have you been to KiKi yet? Is it worth waiting for a table?
UP: Yes, and yes! KiKi’s menu is hard to summarize, just like Soul Gastrolounge’s menu. It’s Greco-French in some ways, but with chef Jay Pound’s signature unexpected twists. It’s also one of the most beautiful restaurants in town, with so much personality that eschews a lot of the current trends you see. If you want to cut down your wait time, you can get in line from your phone on the restaurant’s website. And order the frog legs.
