Q:  I have a two-part question. 1) Who makes the best dumplings to take to party? 2) Do you know of anybody who offers full dim sum catering for a party, including bringing a cart?
Tom: My go-to for dumplings is always The Dumpling Lady (South End and Optimist Park). Chef Qian Zhang offers an assortment of tasty dumpling options including sweet pork belly, pork & chives, shrimp & chicken, chicken & veggie, and all-veggie. If you are lucky, her incredible soup dumplings might be an option. Sun’s Kitchen in LoSo is another good choice. They also have a nice assortment, plus come in very festive party colors. As for the dim sum, that’s a big ask. Full rolling cart dim sum catering is rare in any city. Kristen recommends checking with Open Rice which does offer catering of its dim sum dishes. Q:  I was just was at a stop light and looked over to Elizabeth Avenue and saw a sign for Taj House. Know anything about it?
Tom: Taj House Modern Indian officially opened on Valentine’s Day in the former Big Ben’s space on Elizabeth, which was Carpe Diem before that. It is positioning itself as a high-end Indian fusion restaurant offerering traditional and creative takes on Indian standard. The restaurant seats about 100 and offers a private dining space for up to 25, plus two full bars. It is owned by a consortium of local investors. Plans are to make this a flagship with multiple locations planned. One in Mooresville has been hinted. I haven’t been yet, but it is on my list.
