Q&A: Our story inspiration and hibachi

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: What inspires you to choose the topics you choose to write about?
Kristen: That’s a great question! A lot of our story ideas come simply from conversations with people. During interviews with sources and casual conversations with readers alike, we’re always asking what’s happening, what’s new, what’s next, and what you want to know. We try to focus on stories that haven’t been told yet and stay away from hype stories. If something has been written by every other news outlet in town, we’ll link to it in our newsletter for you to read, but we’re not going to rewrite it. We want to be helpful, writing stories that help our readers get to know Charlotte’s food scene. We also want to ensure that our industry subscribers get the information they need, which is why you’ll find news pieces centered on things like Covid-19 restrictions and requirements.

Q: I would love hibachi! Any recommendations? I’ve been craving it!
Kristen: We do have a few recommendations for you! Justin Burke likes Japan 49 in Steele Creek. If you’re not looking for the show with it, Anita Skogland suggests Yama, as well as Mr. Tokyo, which is currently only offering takeout.

Q: Are you doing another round of cocktail kits? If so, when?
Kristen: Yes! A lot of you mentioned wanting more old-fashioneds, so we’ll be returning to those for our next kit. We’re hoping to set pick-up for the weekend of March 13. Stay tuned!

Q: What are some of the Valentine’s Day menus you are most excited about?
Kristen: If we were dining out, I’d be booking a table at Aqua e Vino, which is offering a four-course tasting menu all weekend, Sea Level N.C. (they’ll have roses for sale along with a special menu), or 300 East, which is offering a three-course meal with a filet for the main course and a dessert called “Netflix and Chill,” made with caramel corn and candy.
