Q&A: Non-alcoholic wine and our favorite soup
Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Who sells your favorite bowl of soup in town?
UP: Right now, I’m big on N.C. Red’s New England clam chowder. The cream base is hearty and filling, though a bit indulgent, and the Benton’s bacon adds a delicious smoky note to the classic soup. For something a little lighter, I go for Pasta & Provisions’ Italian wedding soup.
Q: Is there a good red non-alcoholic wine?
UP: This question is best answered by Anita Skogland, UP contributor and wine instructor. For sparkling non-alcoholic wines, she suggests checking out World Market, which are labeled as sparkling juice beverages. “The red is like a Rhône blend; the white is like a chardonnay and riesling blend,” she says. “World Market also has juices in wine-like bottles, drink as is, well-chilled, or add club soda to make them sparkling.” She recommends the blueberry but the store also sells blackberry, pomegranate, cranberry, and orange. She also suggests Trader Joe’s for their sparkling non-alcoholic Chardonnay.
Q: Can you recommend your favs for Peppervine and Haymaker? Trying to decide.
UP: If you’re choosing between these two, you should consider what vibe you’re going for. Peppervine has some of the best service and one of the most consistent kitchens in town, but the SouthPark vibe doesn’t reflect the excitement of what’s on your plate. Haymaker, on the other hand, has a more sultry vibe and overlooks Romare Bearden Park. At Haymaker, my favorite dish is the crispy pork belly. It’s served over Sea Island red peas with Benton’s bacon — the kind of dish that defines the new Southern cuisine of modern cooking using regional ingredients. At Peppervine, the pappardelle “carbonara” is one of the best things I’ve eaten all year. Read our reviews of Peppervine and Haymaker for more details.
