Q&A: Michael Shortino’s legacy, dairy free ice cream

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Very sad to see the passing of Michael Shortino. To you, what will be his legacy?
Kristen: As I mentioned in this morning’s newsletter, I think his legacy will be in helping define South End as a dining destination. In the early days of Futo Buta, waits were hours long — and everyone waited for a table anyway. There was no other restaurant with that sense of personality in South End, and Futo Buta became a go-to for both chefs and all kinds of diners. While Lincoln’s Haberdashery is a wonderful restaurant, it was Futo Buta that was a defining opening for Charlotte.

Q: What places serve dairy free ice cream?
Kristen: Can you believe it’s September with these temperatures?! I’m a big fan of Title Belt Frozen Desserts, partially because I love professional wrestling and partially because it’s tasty. You can find a limited number of their flavors at Two Scoops. More flavors are available if you order directly from Title Belt and pick up on Wednesdays at Free Range Brewing in NoDa. Another great option is Seemingly Overzealous at Camp North End. There’s always a dairy-free option on rotation at Cold-Hearted Gelato; right now, those are raspberry and watermelon lychee basil.
