Q&A: Meal kits from local restaurants, online events

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink

Q: Are farmer’s markets allowed to be open this weekend?
UP: Yes, they are, though things will look a little different. Shoppers are being asked to let vendors handle the products, practice social distancing, and get in and out of the market as quickly as possible.

Q: When will you be releasing your full schedule of online events?
UP: The next several are posted online here! We hope you’ll join us! We don’t know if we’ll ever have a full schedule, because we have no idea how long this stay-at-home order will last. However, as long as we’re stuck at home, we’ll keep scheduling fun, online things to do!

Q: Are any of our local restaurants doing meal kits? We ordered weekly from Sun Basket, but would much rather get things from local places to support them.
UP: That’s so awesome of you! Restaurants are just starting to get these up and running. As of right now, Common Market is offering burger kits. They’re adding pizza, stir fry, and taco kits on Friday. Each kit is $25 and serves four. Chop & Chisel, in Camp North End, is also offering taco kits. Santhoshi’s Kitchen, which you can find online or at South End Market, does Indian cooking kits. The Porter’s House is rolling out meal kits next week (stay tuned!), and Orrman’s Cheese Shop will soon be offering fondue and raclette kits. You can find cocktail kits at Bardo and Haberdish. I’d expect a lot more meal kits to pop up soon. We’ll collect them for you soon. Or, if you’d like to be sure you’re supporting local farmers, you can find local produce for order online at Your Mom’s Donuts or at the NoDa Company Store, which has turned into a mini-grocer.

Q: Why are my kale salads always so tough when the ones I get at restaurants aren’t?!
UP: Are you massaging the kale? It sounds funny, but it really makes a difference. I learned this from Chef Alyssa at Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen. I will tear it up, then add a little olive oil and lemon juice in a bowl. I massage until you don’t hear much crackling, then add salt and pepper. Voila! —Kristen Wile
