    Q&A: Last-minute Christmas catering

Each week, we answer your Charlotte food and drink questions

    Sea Level

Sea Level’s fresh fish options are a good option for someone who is dairy-free. Kristen Wile/UP

Q: What are some of the best restaurants for a dairy allergy?
    UP:
I’d look for cuisines that tend to be low-dairy anyway, like Mediterranean and Asian. Several Asian places, like Baku or Yama Izakaya, have dishes beyond sushi, so you can get something different if that’s what you’re in the mood for. If you’re looking for a good meal with girlfriends, try Bulla Gastrobar in SouthPark. Most smaller, scratch-made kitchens will be able to help you, too — places like 300 East, Haymaker, or Good Food on Montford. Just be clear about what you can and can’t eat to your server.

Q: I’m in over my head for Christmas. Is there anywhere still taking orders?
UP: You’ve got a little bit of time left from a few places. Sweet Lew’s is offering up smoked meats, which need to be ordered Friday. Aqua e Vino, an authentic Italian spot in Strawberry Hill, is selling desserts with a 36-hour turnaround time. Pick up your choice of tart at the restaurant after 5 p.m. from options that include coconut, apricot, and chocolate tarts. You can also still purchase your meal from Reid’s Fine Foods, but that ends today, so hurry up!

Q: Hey, there! I’m a big fan of the site. Thanks for everything you’re doing. … My spouse and I enjoy longer dinners, usually with friends, so we are partial to tasting menus. Which restaurants have some of the better menus in the $60-$85 range per person (not including any drink pairings)?
    UP:
There are very, very few tasting menus left in town! The McNinch House’s is far above that price range, and likely isn’t what you’re looking for — the dishes are more like smaller portions of traditional high-end cuisine. Heirloom opened as a tasting menu-only spot, but that changed last year. There is still a tasting menu option, however, and Barlow tends to have the most fun when guests order the chef’s choice experience. Several restaurants can give you a tasting menu experience, however — places such as Zeppelin or the Asbury can easily take you through a tasting if you just give them the freedom to order for you. Also, check back on this in a week or so — we might be able to give you exactly what you’re looking for soon.
