Q&A: Gluten-free at Puerta, Charlotte classics

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: I heard that Puerta has an all gluten-free menu, can you confirm?
    Kristen:
Just about! We asked general manager Phi Hoang, who told us everything on the dinner menu is gluten free, with the exception of the empanadas. There will eventually be a gluten-free option there, too.

Q: As a recent retiree, a buddy of mine and I are starting to visit some of the legendary Charlotte area spots for lunch – which we may or may not have been to previously.  So far we’ve hit Lupie’s and Brook’s, and tomorrow is South 21.  I have Bar-B-Q King, Dive N in Pineville (not legendary, but a great spot) and Open Kitchen on my list. Other suggestions in that vein?  Starting with lunch-type spots, but may evolve to dinner, too — thinking Providence Sundries. (Don’t say Beef & Bottle, or I may cancel my subscription!)
Kristen: Heard on Beef & Bottle! You’ve made a great start here. It seems like your list for lunch centers on more dive-esque places. If that’s the case, I’d add in Pinky’s, Mert’s, Big Daddy’s, and The Diamond. For dinner, these places have been around a while and absolutely deserve a visit: Cajun Queen, 300 East, and Lang Van come to mind. Waldhorn is fun, too, and has in business for nearly 25 years.

Q: What’s coming to the new space on Third and Church?
Kristen: Can you send more specifics? Which space are you referring to?

Q: Where should I host my office holiday party for 125 people?
Kristen: Wow, that’s a big party! The Duke Mansion is always lovely around the holidays. The Trolley Barn in Atherton might be a good fit. Otherwise, not many restaurants can fit that size. A few that can with a full buyout: Mimosa Grill or Rooster’s SouthPark. Haberdish is available for a full buyout, but can fit up to 120.

On legendary restaurants – add Fenwick’s to the list! It is far too often overlooked.
