Q&A: Changes coming to Charlotte and Counter-

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: As 2020 comes to a close in the next few months, what are some big changes or new concepts coming to the Charlotte area as far as restaurants/food&drink? Are some projects being delayed or put off until 2021?
UP: The projects that were moving forward pre-Covid-19 still are. Two of the most anticipated are Orto, from chef Paul Verica, and Supperland, coming from the owners of Crepe Cellar, Haberdish, and Growlers Pourhouse to Plaza Midwood. Most restaurateurs we’ve spoken to about this say they don’t plan on opening another brick-and-mortar restaurant until there is some relief from the pandemic, but if a space becomes available at the right price, they would consider it. There will likely be a lot of turnkey restaurants coming on the market as places close, though only a few restaurant owners will come out of this with the reserves to expand. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the city’s biggest restaurateurs becoming even bigger after this. We’re expecting to see a lot more ghost kitchens, too. An interesting thing I’ve noticed is that new restaurants aren’t getting the mad rush at opening they once did. People are going out less during the week, and when they go out, they go to restaurants they’re familiar with and feel safe with. Restaurants often rely on that rush to make up some of the investment of opening a restaurant, so we’ll see what that means for them long-term.

One thing I’ll be watching closely is how menu pricing changes. This is a subtle change, but an important one. Many restaurants have had to increase their prices due to the cost of takeout containers, PPE, and extra sanitation products. Restaurants have long survived on slim margins, but if diners accept the higher prices now and restaurants don’t adjust them back when those extra costs are no longer necessary, it could become a slightly more sustainable business.

Q: Would you recommend Counter- for a special anniversary dinner?
UP: That depends on what kind of couple you are. If it’s a celebration of two foodies who want to try something new and exciting, absolutely, you should check out this fun, new concept from chef Sam Hart. The music is loud, however, and there are frequent interruptions to your conversation. If you’re looking for a romantic date night where you hold hands and reminisce about your love, this is not the place to go. Try our restaurant finder if that’s the case.

Q: Which beach are you going to? Happy Birthday, Jon!
UP: Thanks! We’re headed to Oak Island and plan on enjoying plenty of seafood.
