Q&A: Boozy cupcakes & meatloaf
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: I used to love the boozy cupcakes from Fu Man Chu. Is anyone doing that now?
Tom: Wow! What a memory you just triggered. They were indeed fantastic cupcakes and owner Andy Jackson was even a better man. He is deeply missed. And yes, he left quite a void. The good news is that a new Charlotte business has recently taken the baton. Lush Dessert Bar‘s owner Nichole Kinchion went through Center City Partner’s HIIVE (Hub for Inclusivity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship) program and is selling via farmers markets and popups as well as her online store. Her offerings include such tipsy treats as Vodka-Spiked Strawberry, Rumchata Chocolate, Red Velvet Martini, Hot Buttered Rum, and Margarita. To my knowledge, Kinchion is the only one doing that on a regular bases, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of our area bakers and pastry chefs bellying up some boozy treats from time to time.
Q: I love meatloaf, but have zero cooking skills. Where can I dig in?
Tom: Very few things give a comforting culinary hug like a good meatloaf. My favorite comfort food spot overall is Nana Morrison’s Soul Food (off Yorkshire and off Brookshire). Not only tear-evoking meatloaf, but a dizzying array of comfort food dishes any nana would be proud of. Mert’s Heart & Soul in Uptown has been serving up Mom’s meatloaf since 1998. Last I checked, Lupie’s Café on Monroe is still doing Meatloaf Monday (only open until 4 p.m. these days though). Don’t forget the mashed potatoes.
