With Halloween approaching fast, you might be looking for some fun around the city that doesn’t involve traditional trick-or-treating. As always, Unpretentious Palate is here to help. For those who prefer a more grown-up night of thrills and scares, here are some events happening around the city.

Mere’s Cheese and Wine Boutique in Dilworth is taking 5% off of all its wine bottles on October 30 if you come to the shop in your favorite costumes. Stock up on wine for a night watching scary movies with your boo or a spooky-themed party with friends.

POTIONS, a pop-up bar concept, will be taking over the patio at Haberdish on Halloween night from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. There’s no cover for the special event and festivities will include a DJ, a costume contest, and a drink menu specially-crafted for the evening by Colleen Hughes and her staff. 

VBGB Beer Hall & Garden and 8.2.0 Pizzeria & Bar are offering two nights of cover-free fun. VBGB gets things started at 8 p.m. on October 31 with Halloween-themed trivia that will transition into a dance party at 10. The individual with the most original costume and the couple or group with the best costumes will receive $100 gift cards in the costume contest. The party continues the night of November 1 with 8.2.0’s Beers & Boos Party starting at 9 p.m. with DJ Stampede in the Sunflower room and complementary karaoke all night long. 

Optimist Hall will be hosting its first “Hall-OH-ween” event on October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. This event is open to revelers of all ages with trick-or-treating throughout the decorated hall, a pumpkin-carving contest, and Willy Wonka-themed drinks at Spindle Bar, like the Snozzberries Taste like Snozzberries slushy. El Thrifty will be getting in on the themed cocktail game with the ominously-named Skull Crusher, Thriller, and The Afterlife. As always, dressing up is strongly encouraged. 

Enjoy Halloween and the Charlotte skyline from 22 floors up at Nuvole Rooftop. Starting October 29 and running through Halloween night, Nuvole and AC Hotel’s Fifth Floor Lounge are offering 50% of select beer and wine by the glass.
